Updated on October 23, 2026

Is it better to pay in dollars or reais on an international purchase?

Is it better to pay in dollars or reais in an international store?

If the store lets you choose and your card holds a dollar balance, pay in dollars: there is no conversion at purchase. The reais option is the store or payment processor converting the price, and the rate used can be less favourable than paying in dollars.

With a Brazilian bank card the maths differ: paying in dollars makes the bank convert at its own rate and add IOF. Compare the total in both currencies before you confirm.

How do I check the checkout currency, step by step?

  1. At checkout, look for the currency selector or the question "pay in reais or in dollars".
  2. Write down the total in dollars and the total in reais the store shows.
  3. Divide the reais total by the dollar total to see the built-in exchange rate.
  4. Compare that rate with the day's dollar rate on the Central Bank of Brazil site.
  5. Choose dollars if the store's rate is worse or if you cannot compare.

What happens if the store charges in another currency?

If the charge comes in reais or another currency, Visa converts the amount to dollars on the purchase date and it comes out of your dollar balance. The final total can differ slightly from the amount shown, so leave some slack in the balance.

A declined purchase takes no money from the balance. Check the charge notification in the app, which shows the amount debited.

How much does it cost to pay in dollars with the card?

  • One-off issue fee: US$ 10 on Standard or US$ 100 on Premium; no monthly fee.
  • Top-up fee: 2% with USDT on Standard and 1% on Premium; 5% with a bank card on both plans.
  • US$ 0.25 per approved purchase, taken from the balance with the purchase; a declined purchase is not charged.
  • Monthly spending limit: US$ 10,000 on Standard and US$ 100,000 on Premium.
  • On a bank-card top-up your bank may add IOF and apply its own exchange rate.

When does paying in reais make sense?

  • When the store only charges in reais and offers no dollar option.
  • When the reais price is fixed and you have already compared it with the dollar total.
  • When you pay with a bank card without a dollar balance and prefer to see the final amount on the statement.
